New Core Objectives approved by HHS for Healthy People 2030The following objectives were developed by the Association for Prevention Teaching and Research (APTR) Healthy People Curriculum Task Force (Task Force) in collaboration with Healthy People 2030 workgroups, which are led by subject matter experts in various federal government agencies. The Task Force national health professions education associations have collected data from their member institutions for two decades to track progress in the integration of clinical prevention and population health content into health professions curricula. In early 2022, the Task Force collected baseline data to convert the prior developmental objectives to core objectives. Mid-decade data is being collected in 2025.

Why Environmental Health?
Q: Why was Environmental Health chosen rather than focusing on six core prevention and population health content areas as was done in Healthy People 2020?
A: The educational objectives in Healthy People 2020 were reduced from 8 objectives with 42 sub-objectives to 5 developmental objectives in Healthy People 2030. A composite measure combining 6 core content areas per objective was proposed but not approved. Therefore, the Task Force chose to focus on environmental health because the data for HP 2020 and baseline data for HP 2030 showed lower curriculum inclusion for environmental health than other curriculum content areas. In addition, it had strong applicability to current public health priorities such as climate change and health equity.
